Our Story
Built in our home, for our daughters
D1 Academics grew out of a real-life experiment. We built it in our home, for our daughters, during a pandemic.
We didn't start with a product idea. We started with a question: what would it actually take to develop a self-directed, high-performing learner?
We experimented. We failed. We iterated. And over time, working directly with our daughters, we developed the framework and the infrastructure that became D1 Academics.
Co-Founder
Meet John: Engineer, technologist, and builder
He's spent a career solving complex challenges in engineering but more importantly in the lives of young people.
John holds a degree in Electrical Engineering and Business from UPenn and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from UVA. But his most formative work happened off the résumé: two decades in youth and college campus ministry, walking alongside the next generation at some of the most pivotal moments of their lives.
Most recently, he served as Chief Technology Officer at a nonprofit, directing website and app development. He brings the rare combination of deep technical skill and deep relational investment in young people.
Co-Founder
Meet Cynthia: Educator, linguist, and learning architect
She doesn't just understand how people learn — she's spent twenty years in the rooms where it happens.
Cynthia holds a degree in Communications and Business Administration from UC Berkeley and a Master's in Linguistics from SJSU. Her career spans every layer of education from classroom teacher, college lecturer to curriculum developer, and edtech manager giving her a 360-degree view of where the system works and where it consistently fails students.
She brings the kind of expertise that can only be earned in the room, two decades of watching learners succeed and struggle, and a clear-eyed sense of what actually moves the needle.
Proof of Concept
Meet Ally: She started university at 16 — with junior standing
Deep work, structured focus, and forward momentum — that's her M.O.
Seat-time requirements and classroom pacing were throttling a student who could move at twice the speed. We rebuilt her environment around mastery. The results spoke for themselves. She enrolled at a Tier 1 university at 16 on a full scholarship, studying aerospace engineering, and is on track to graduate in three years.
Proof of Concept
Meet Kris: She started coding at six
She didn't wait for school to introduce her to technology — she was already ahead of it.
Today she's part of a competitive mechatronics team, dual-enrolled at the college level, and building the kind of technical fluency that most students spend years chasing.
Both daughters compete at the varsity level in tennis, and they have never once let academics and athletics work against each other.
The Why
Meet Thela: She was born in 2020 — and she changed everything
Some children arrive and quietly shift your priorities. Thela arrived and rewrote the mission.
Born into a world already being reshaped by technology, Thela represents a generation that will need more than what traditional education was designed to provide. She and her peers are the reason this product exists.
Her arrival was the moment both parents made the decision to eventually walk away from full-time careers and build something they believe will matter. They're doing this not just for their family, but for a generation born to rewrite the world.
Mission
Why D1 Academics Exists
Our daughters were the proof of concept. D1 Academics is what we built from it.
We believe the most important resource a family can give a child is the capacity to learn. The ability to sustain effort, manage one's own time, push through difficulty, and develop genuine competence. And we believe every family serious about their child's future should have access to a learning system built to develop that capacity — not just the families who can afford elite private tutors or prestigious programs. We are building the infrastructure to make it scalable.
We also believe this is a matter of national importance. The next generation of AI researchers, engineers, and entrepreneurs will determine the trajectory of industries, economies, and nations. The families who invest in building that capacity today are not just investing in their children. They are investing in what comes next.
